History of the American Airlines’ Lounges
For a very long time American Airlines lounges were to be avoided as they were very low quality, with little to offer travellers connecting in the US.
For OneWorld affiliate members these lounges were a real let down. Especially because American Airlines Admirals Club members got full benefits when in other lounges, like the Qatar, Qantas, or Cathay Pacific lounges worldwide.
The New Flagship Lounge Concept Roll Out
The introduction of the Flagship Lounge concept is a Godsend. These lounges are now available in Los Angeles, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami and New York’s JFK. Further clubs are being revamped, and will open in the near future in Houston and Chicago.
Here are our thoughts on why you should visit a Flagship lounge in the US and see what has changed.
Rest and Relaxtion
We love an airport lounge that provides a space for resting, and this lounge has a great quiet room. A place to quietly get away from it all, close your eyes and relax, is definitely high on our list.
This is especially true if you travel extensively and have to deal with the stresses that come with that. In this Flagship lounge there is a range of seating. You will find the recliners an easy choice to make yourself comfortable. So it’s easy to sit down and let yourself relax.
Flagship Lounge Seating Options
There are a fantastic range of seating options in the JFK Flagship lounge, including private, work, and social areas. This is fantastic for a longer layover when you might first want to start with getting some work done.
You could choose a booth with power connections to work initially. After that if you decide to have a meal, you could move to a different area, even the dining tables. This makes for a nice change of scenery.
Perhaps later on you might be ready to totally relax with a glass of your favourite tipple in hand. Maybe you want to do some people watching. This lounge caters to all these options and many more. It gets our vote for a superb multi-purpose space.
There is an extensive range of dining options in this Flagship lounge with enough to keep even fussy eaters happy. Most travellers will start with the buffet, where there is a wide variety of good quality food available.
However in the Flagship First Dining Room, reserved exclusively for First Class passengers, there is a full sit down, a la carte menu. We weren’t travelling First Class this time so couldn’t use it – perhaps next time!
And to Drink…
The Flagship lounge has a terrific Champagne bar offering a good range of Champagnes. It also offer a wonderful selection of red and white wine, spirits, and mix-your-own cocktails.
Of note is that all of the alcoholic drinks on offer are high-quality and very drinkable. Kudos to American Airlines for providing this in a large lounge, with a high volume of people coming through each day.
Plane Spotting Location
This Flagship lounge is well positioned with large panoramic windows looking out at this busy airport. There are great views across the apron, which are perfect for a plane spotter such as ourselves!
The recliners in these window facing locations are superbly comfortable too. They even have their own ottoman to put your feet up. Now you can really watch the world outside move by in style!
High-speed wi-fi is very important to us, as it is to many travellers, and this lounge does this very well. Meaning that you are able to work easily before getting on the plane to your next destination.
There are also multiple departure boards to keep you updated on your flight as boarding approaches. This allows you to stay in the lounge until it is time to get on board your plane.
Expert Traveller Recommends…
This Flagship lounge is impressive. American Airlines have certainly raised the bar substantially on their offer to the global travel community.
Once we would have avoided Admirals Clubs like the plague. However, these new Flagship Lounges are well worth spending a few hours in. Highly recommended!
